Technology Highlight: Bespoke Battery Management System

Mon, 09 March, 2026

Managing the safety, health and state of charge of modern batteries is becoming increasingly significant to industry, especially with high power and energy density batteries. A number of well-publicised battery failures that have led to millions of dollars’ worth of damage to infrastructure and transport have highlighted the need for a solution.

UK-based SME BatteryIQ have developed their BatteryIG Battery Management System (BMS) to manage the safety and status of any battery system. Because it is a modular system it can be tailored to meet specific requirements, as needed.

Engineered and tested in the UK with independent validation from Cambridge Design Partnership, BatteryIQ’s BMS monitors all key battery health indicators, using a low energy Bluetooth transmitter (or CANbus) to constantly share the information while detecting risks at the first sign of developing. This allows users to address any problems quickly while further damage is preventable and possibly reversible. Battery data can be shared to central servers or other specified end points so that relevant stakeholders all have access, including individuals, building managers, insurers, public agencies and manufacturers. An inbuilt memory feature records the battery history to oversee maintenance or warranty issues.

Optimised to be used in risk sensitive industries such as aerospace, defence and space, the BatteryIQ technology is applicable in any scenario where a battery is deployed.

BatteryIQ BMS can detect, report and protect against key safety risks, such as:

  • Unexpected temperature changes in use indicating a fault
  • Unsuitable environmental conditions for charging and discharging
  • Water ingress
  • Cell under voltage
  • Individual cell performance drift, indicating damage
  • Incorrect charge profile – will not accept charge if input is not suitable
