Technology Highlight: CNC Machining

Mon, 30 March, 2026

Cambridge, UK-based Advanced Precision Technologies offer ultra-accurate 5-axis CNC machining and metrology services, supporting rapid prototyping and low-volume production for high-performance sectors including aerospace, defence, motorsport and space. They reached out to us as the ESA Technology Broker for the UK to explain more about their offering to the space sector.

The system on offer is centred around multi-axis CNC machining combined with advanced computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programming and automated inspection technologies.

The machining capability, up to 5-axis, allows for the production of low-volume complex components in a range of materials within tight geometric tolerances. Able to work from solid or semi-finished stock, thermal compensation and machine calibration ensure that the machining process remains stable and repeatable over time. In addition, offline programming using software platforms allow for optimised toolpaths, reduced cycle times, and effective simulation prior to production.

Dimensional inspection is integrated through the use of coordinate measuring machines (CMM), enabling full traceability and measurement reports suitable for space sector requirements.

The technology is suitable for applications requiring high-precision prototyping, flight-ready hardware, or development components where turnaround times and repeatability are critical. Potential uses include mechanical components for satellites, propulsion systems, space structures, ground support equipment, or test rigs.

Because the solution is scalable, it can be integrated into broader manufacturing supply chains as a reliable partner for space-sector development and production programmes.

Advanced Precision Technologies operate in line with ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), supporting a structured, auditable approach to process control, traceability, and sustainability.
