Tech Highlight: Novel Non-Contact Magnetic Gear Transmission

Mon, 18 May, 2026

One of the technologies presented to us as ESA Technology Brokers for the UK is a novel, non-contact magnetic gear transmission solution. Created by Cleaner World Technologies, it acts as an alternative to mechanical gears.

Because the solution requires no lubrication, there is potential for its use for satellite refuelling and other space sector applications. As a non-contact, frictionless gear, it could replace a variety of gear types including linear to rotary gearing systems.

Cleaner World Technologies’ gears are available in two versions, one where magnets are interlocked (higher torque) and one that is non-interlocked so that the magnets ‘pass’ each other, allowing for speeds of up to 8000 rpm.

The gears are available in different designs, but ultimately, they consist of one larger rotor/wheel (typically 8 magnets) and a smaller rotor/wheel (typically 4 magnets) with the small rotor driving the larger rotor. The two magnets (20mm x23mm) are typically stacked on top of one-another so that the force is concentrated in the middle. The gears can operate forwards, backwards, upside down, or at any other angle without any reduction or interference with performance. The gear is very smooth and harmonious at high speeds and was 100% reliable during in-house testing.

The system boasts a number of advantages and innovations, including:

- Reduced wear and tear, meaning less maintenance is required, saving costs

- Lower carbon footprint due to the lack of lubrication required, which also makes the system suitable for space use

- A lack of friction means a reduced loss of power and lower running costs

- Self-regulating – will ‘slip’ when experiencing excess loads

- Less heat, noise and vibration
