Prepare for Space Support: Theta Technologies Ltd

Mon, 06 July, 2026

As part of the Prepare for Space programme, TWI worked with Theta Technologies Ltd, based at Exeter Science Park in Clyst Honiton, near Exeter.

Theta Technologies specialises in nonlinear resonance (NLR) non-destructive testing, a technique used to identify microscopic internal flaws in complex, additively manufactured components. Their testing systems are able to detect flaws that may be invisible to traditional X-ray computed tomography or ultrasound, with inspections completed in less than one minute.

TWI, acting as the ESA Technology Broker UK, provided consultancy support to help Theta Technologies develop a structured training framework for its NLR technology. This included support with the design of training syllabi and lesson plans across Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, helping Theta move from internal technical expertise towards a more formalised training pathway.

The support began with a visit to Theta Technologies’ facilities in Exeter, where TWI reviewed the NLR method, associated equipment, current practices and training requirements. This was followed by a series of remote workshops and guidance sessions focused on defining the training levels, finalising the syllabus structure, and developing lesson plans for future course delivery.

TWI also provided guidance based on established NDT training practices, including the use of structured course templates, competence-based learning principles, and clear progression between training levels. This helped Theta Technologies establish a consistent framework for what operators would need to know and demonstrate at each stage of training.

Theta Technologies confirmed that the “excellent” support “provided clear and patient guidance through the process of designing the training syllabus and lesson plan.” They also noted that “communications were clear and prompt at all times,” adding that the ability to offer Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 training programmes for Theta’s NLR technology would be “essential to widen our access to the market.”

The support provided through the Prepare for Space programme has therefore helped Theta Technologies strengthen the commercial readiness of its inspection technology by creating the foundations for a formal training route. This will support wider adoption of the technology by helping customers and operators access structured training aligned to different levels of competence.

In addition, TWI provided introductions to Airbus Defence and Space and Safran Engineering Services as potential commercial leads, supporting Theta Technologies in exploring future opportunities within the space and advanced engineering sectors.
