As the ESA Technology Broker for the UK, TWI provided support to Cleaner World Technologies as part of the ‘Prepare for Space’ initiative. The original aim was to assess the potential of Cleaner World Technologies’ non-contact magnetic gear transmission solution for space applications as well as establishing a clearer commercial and technical route forward.
The innovative magnetic gear system developed by Cleaner World Technologies transmits torque without the conventional gear-tooth contact, with the technology being considered as an alternative to traditional gearing in applications. The non-contact system promises reduced friction, wear, lubrication and maintenance.
The main space applications that were identified included satellite refuelling, space robotics, in-orbit manufacturing and other rotating or low-maintenance mechanisms, although potential terrestrial routes were also discussed, including manufacturing automation, medical applications and offshore renewable energy.
Cleaner World Technologies were invited to participate in a number of different activities as part of the Prepare for Space programme, including an introductory workshop to provide an insight into the workings of ESA, the UK Space Agency (UKSA) relevant space-sector platforms, registration routes and funding opportunities. We also reviewed and helped prioritise potential applications and delivered reviews of the product and technology landscape for magnetic rotating systems, technical publications, patent information and background literature.
With application requirements and specifications identified, we offered intellectual property / patent-related support around the planetary/interlocked magnetic arrangement and 3D time-dependent COMSOL Multiphysics AC/DC simulation of a non-coaxial magnetic gear in air and vacuum to provide indicative torque-performance information.
The Prepare for Space programme provided greater clarity for Cleaner World Technologies with regard to where their innovative system could fit into the space sector as well as the types of partners they could align with and routes that could be followed to progress the technology further.
Cleaner World Technologies reported positive feedback for the programme, which was completed in July 2026, revealing that the support had helped define realistic space applications, strengthened their understanding of the space sector, and improved confidence and credibility when speaking with external organisations, including potential partners, funding bodies and catapult networks.
