Technology Highlight: Advanced Atmospheric Gas Processing

Wed, 21 May, 2025

As ESA Technology Broker UK, we have been presented with a range of different technologies that have potential applications for space use, including advanced atmospheric gas processing from Universal Atmosphere Processing (UAP).

UK-based start-up, UAP offers a plasma-based atmospheric gas separation technology that can be used for life support, in-situ resource utilisation, and CO₂ capture in space missions.

Modularly scalable, the technology performs simultaneous atmospheric gas ionisation and electromagnetic separation to isolate gases from an incoming air stream, delivering high-purity gases and energy efficiency.

The system is less energy-intensive than traditional cryogenic or chemical separation techniques as it selectively extracts gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and noble gases like argon, neon, krypton, and xenon while simultaneously producing purified, breathable air.

With the potential to deliver significant economic, environmental, and operational advantages, UAP’s innovative technology could offer a viable solution for the space industry.
